SAN FRANCISCO — Nov. 3, 2003 — Cloudmark, Inc. and Sendmail Inc. today announced a strategic partnership after months of exhaustive, end-to-end testing of 42 other anti-spam products and services revealed Authority™, Cloudmark's enterprise anti-spam solution, to be the best for its customers needs from lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) to highest effectiveness. Sendmail, the leading provider of integrated message management solutions that handles over 60 percent of the email flowing across the Internet, spent several months evaluating dozens of anti-spam solutions, running millions of email messages through each. After conducting the most rigorous and competitive testing to date, Sendmail selected Cloudmark to deliver the best overall spam protection to its customer base, which includes 70 percent of the Fortune 1000. Cloudmark, the company that delivers spam protection to thousands of businesses including Documentum, Fidelity, Restoration Hardware, Asics and Nolte, outshined the other anti-spam candidates with its first-ever automated spamDNA™ technology that delivers phenomenal accuracy and the lowest number of false positives all with unsurpassed performance.
"Most enterprises looking for an anti-spam solution only have the capacity, time and resources to test a few products," said Rand Wacker, director of product strategy and planning for Sendmail. "Our customers trust Sendmail for delivery of best-of-breed technologies and complete solutions, so we conducted extensive testing of over forty technologies. Cloudmark's spamDNA technology proved to be the best solution for our customers."
Recognizing powerful anti-spam protection is critical to its message management solutions, Sendmail chose Cloudmark as the only suitable integrated solution for its customers, drastically simplifying the expensive and unwieldy process enterprise customers undergo when qualifying anti-spam vendors. With today's announcement, enterprise customers can take advantage of a rigorously tested, plug-and-play solution that is tightly integrated with their existing email infrastructure to deliver the highest accuracy.
"Our partnership has blossomed quickly based on glowing results from our early customers," said Dave Anderson, president and CEO for Sendmail. "One of our first customers to test Authority called us immediately to report 99 percent accuracy and zero false positives. That is even better than the results we saw in our tests. We set very high standards and Cloudmark has been able to surpass them. We are excited."
"There are lots of anti-spam products which may give corporations short term relief from spam, but sacrifice in key areas that enterprises demand," said Karl Jacob, CEO for Cloudmark. "It's the other deciding factors including the lowest TCO, the highest performance and the easiest deployment that are only possible through our first-ever automated solution that delivers the highest accuracy too."
Authority interfaces to Sendmail directly through the Milter interface, drastically simplifying and accelerating the deployment of anti-spam technology in an enterprise. Authority also runs in memory, so there's only 5-10 percent impact on the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) compared to others at 40 percent, and it requires no new hardware. This means that customers will be able to quickly get up and running with the highest performance spam detection and still maintain the full functionality of the Sendmail MTA on the front and back end. It will also result in a deployment that is faster than many of the proxy solutions on the market because it does not have to be sandwiched between two more capable MTAs to meet the needs of today's complicated enterprise mail systems. In addition, Authority operates without a connection to Cloudmark. Other solutions require a constant connection to external servers which entails reconfiguring firewalls in order to update their rules every minute.
Unlike other anti-spam products that use manual approaches to fight spam, Cloudmark introduces the first-ever automated process of capturing, analyzing and predicting spam to generate powerful spamDNA. Just as scientists predict whether someone will have a particular disease by looking for specific gene mutations, Cloudmark Authority predicts whether a message is spam by looking for specific mutations in message structure called spamGenes. Cloudmark improves Authority's effectiveness by constantly and automatically evolving the spamDNA it gets from SpamNet™, Cloudmark's peer-to-peer (P2P) community of nearly 700,000 users collaborating to fight spam. The spam is fed into the Genetic Evolution Engine to automatically generate spamDNA cartridges. These spamGenes are the powerful building blocks for Authority and the reason it only requires updates every 30-60 days (not every few minutes like others) and calls for minimal administrative intervention. Authority evaluates each message in this way, assigning it a confidence level and accessing company messaging policies to determine appropriate routing action, offering IT administrators' optimal flexibility and manageability.
