About Proofpoint

Do I need to configure reverse DNS?

  • Yes. You must.
  • Many ISPs do not accept messages from IPs with no reverse DNS (rDNS). Sending messages from an IP address with no rDNS may negatively affect your Cloudmark reputation score, as well as your reputation with ISPs and DNS blacklists. For the best message delivery rate, ensure that all outbound IPs are configured with rDNS.
  • For instance mail.example.com would be considered far less generic than 208-83-136-1.sfo.example.com or hosted-by.example.com
  • SpamHaus publishes these useful guidelines for configuring rDNS: http://www.spamhaus.org/faq/section/ISP%2520Spam%2520Issues#128
  • Generally each IP should only have one rDNS name configured. Having multiple rDNS names configured may give inconsistent results.
