Advantages of Cloudmark Fingerprinting
Cloudmark's Advanced Message Fingerprinting™ algorithms were designed to target sophisticated spamming and virus proliferation techniques. Unlike rules, Cloudmark fingerprinting algorithms are extremely lightweight, each optimized to perform only minimal processing on a message. As a result, message throughput is extremely fast and less processing CPU is required.
This approach also contributes to faster threat detection and more accurate message classification. Cloudmark fingerprinting has these advantages over rules and heuristics-based systems:
- Resistant to polymorphic mutations, such as changes in text, URL, image, sender or other attributes
- Language and content-agnostic analysis detects spam in all languages (including those using double-byte characters, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean) and formats, such as images, .pdf and SMS
- Future-proof: fingerprinting algorithms can be fine-tuned to adapt to new categories of threats
- Computationally-lightweight fingerprinting and scanning speeds throughput and dramatically reduces CPU cycles
- Cache of threat fingerprints within Authority is updated every 30-60 seconds for protection against the latest attacks
How Cloudmark Fingerprinting Works

- Fingerprinting algorithms are run across each message
- Relevant parts of the message are fingerprinted
- Messages reduced to anonymous fingerprints
- Fingerprints do not indicate whether message is legitimate or spam
- Fingerprints compared to local cache of known bad fingerprints
- Cache updated every 30 - 60 seconds
- Match: message is identified as abuse
- No match: message is identified as legitimate
