Network Misuse and Fraud Prevention

The Problem

Your current mobile messaging security solutions are ineffective against the new generation of threats and messaging abuse such as spam attacks launched from 'SIM boxes' and subscriber-to-subscriber bullying. In addition, 'grey-traffic' messaging sources are sending SMS and MMS messages through your network without proper payment. This unwanted traffic is burdening your network and degrading subscriber quality of service. Unauthorized and improperly billed messages are reducing your operating revenue and profitability.

Cloudmark's Solution

Detect and Block 'SIM Box' Based Attacks

In order to get around the daily SMS messaging limits imposed by some operators, fraudsters will load multiple SIM cards into chassis-based systems known as SIM boxes. The SIM boxes allow them to send a limited number of messages from each card SIM to avoid blacklisting for messaging abuse. In addition, fraudsters can use SIM boxes to modify or 'morph' attacks when they are discovered and blocked. Attackers use 'canary accounts' to verify that fraudulent messages are getting through. When messages sent to canary accounts are blocked, attackers simply modify the sending numbers or the message contents and continue the attack. Cloudmark includes powerful analytical tools which can be used to identify canary accounts and SIM boxes, and block the abusive behaviour.

Detect and Stop Contract Fraud and Revenue Leakage from Grey-Traffic Sources

Inappropriate bulk sending agreements, or the use of foreign operators without interconnect contracts can allow third-party messaging entities send messages through your network without proper payment. Subscribers will receive the messages but home operators may not receive a mobile termination fee. Cloudmark incorporates advanced on-net/off-net threat detection technologies to stop 'grey market' revenue leakage and restore messaging profits. Most anti-spoofing, flooding and faking solutions use protocol level controls to counteract signalling fraud between mobile networks, but Cloudmark goes beyond to catch mobile attacks that may have already entered your network.

IP Blacklisting Prevention

The Problem

Botnets and third-party sources are sending large amounts of spam to internet destinations through port 25 of your mobile broadband network. These unwanted messages have caused some or all of your outbound IP address space to be added to global real-time blacklists (RBLs), such as those maintained by Spamhaus and UCE Protect. Mobile subscribers who can no longer send email through your network are calling customer service to complain.

Cloudmark's Solution

Cloudmark Edge prevents outbound IP address blacklisting by detecting and blocking outbound spam sent from botnets and third-party sources at the network edge. The appliance-based security solution intercepts email, web requests and file transfers at the network layer, scans traffic at multi-gigabit speeds at the application-layer, and applies granular filtering to block spam and threats. Legitimate emails and messages are allowed while abusive messaging is blocked, enabling operators to have their outbound IP addresses removed from global IP address blacklists.

Botnet Protection

The Problem

The proliferation and resilience of Botnets is a major problem for mobile broadband providers. When subscriber devices become infected, Botnet masters use them to send spam and Botnet viruses to other subscribers. In addition, Botnets are the primary cause of outbound IP address blacklisting and can severely degrade quality of service. Frustrated subscribers call customer service to request virus removal, complain about spam, and ask why they can't send email.

Cloudmark's Solution

Cloudmark Edge, an appliance-based security solution, monitors messaging traffic at the network edge to detect behavioral patterns specific to Botnet-infected devices. Once identified, suspect devices are closely tracked and can be sent to walled garden solutions for automatic remediation and virus removal.
