Openwave and Cloudmark Team to Provide Integrated Anti-Spam Solution
Proven SpamDNA Technology Tackles Messaging Abuse for Service Providers
REDWOOD CITY and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif — Feb. 4, 2004 — Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, and Cloudmark™ Inc., the company that delivers spam protection to thousands of businesses including The General Services Administration (GSA) and Documentum, today announced a partnership to fight spam for service providers worldwide. The agreement includes integrating Cloudmark's first-ever, automated spamDNA™ technology, Authority, into Openwave® Email Mx messaging platform. The integration will deliver a time-tested and proven anti-spam solution to Openwave's email system, which manages 1.3 billion messages a day.
Cloudmark Authority™ delivers the highest effectiveness and lowest false positives by focusing on the structure of email messages with its predictive spamDNA. This also enables Cloudmark to deliver a low cost, low-maintenance solution requiring no new hardware, and when implemented on Openwave's extensions technology, it has minimal impact on the mail transfer agent (MTA). Additionally Authority eliminates the problem of rule latency as it only needs updating every 30-60 days and does not require connections to external servers, or firewall reconfigurations to receive those updates.
"As the anti-spam market consolidates, winning providers will need strong enterprise and service provider customers and deep-seated partnerships from the communications and network security sectors," said Brian Burke, research manager, security products at IDC. "Integrating Cloudmark's technology can relieve Openwave's customers of unwanted email, effectively and affordably. This partnership also bolsters Cloudmark's position in the OEM market."
The collaboration will allow millions of customers to take advantage of cost-effective spam protection that delivers the highest accuracy, inherent operator and end-user controls and industry standard security features. The fully-integrated solution also provides a one-stop shop for all of Openwave's customers' email infrastructure needs. In addition, Authority collaborates with the recently unveiled Cloudmark Rating System to cut carriers' overhead stemming from customer complaints and litigation surrounding spam deluge and false positives. Cloudmark Rating System is the first and only technology to ensure carriers deliver companies' critical email newsletters, updates and billing reminders to subscribers' inboxes, not their spam quarantines.
"Tackling messaging abuse at the service provider level is imperative to protect the end-user," said Richard Wong, general manager of messaging applications, Openwave. "Openwave is taking an aggressive three-tiered approach by fighting abuse at the edge of the network, close to the inbox and in the inbox itself and Cloudmark provides a key element at the filtering layer of Openwave's arsenal."
"Those that handle the world's largest volumes of email daily are long overdue for an economically viable solution that keeps spam out of end user's inboxes without false positives," said Karl Jacob, CEO for Cloudmark. "Cloudmark is proud to be partnering with Openwave to offer customers easy deployment of a proven long-term solution and immediate payback from their email and messaging investments."
Unlike other anti-spam products that use manual approaches to fight spam, Cloudmark introduces the first-ever automated process of capturing, analyzing and predicting spam to generate powerful spamDNA. Just as scientists predict whether someone will have a particular disease by looking for specific gene mutations, Cloudmark Authority predicts whether a message is spam by looking for specific mutations in message structure called spamGenes™. Cloudmark improves Authority's effectiveness by constantly and automatically evolving the spamDNA it gets from SpamNet™, Cloudmark's popular, peer-to-peer (P2P) community of more than 800,000 users collaborating to fight spam. Spam and legitimate email are fed into Cloudmark's Genetic Classifier™ to generate new spamGenes, which in turn allows the product to remain updated for up to two months at a time with little to no administrative attention.
