Cloudmark demoed new technologies at Openwave Messaging Anti-abuse Conference

Solves spam and false positive problem to shed the burden of customer complaints and litigation

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Sept. 29, 2003 — Cloudmark™ Inc., the company that has grown the world's largest SpamFighting community to more than 600,000 users and delivers spam-free inboxes to thousands of businesses, today announced that its CEO, Karl Jacob, presented the company's solutions for effectively filtering spam without catching the "good" email too at the Openwave Systems Messaging Anti-abuse conference. Jacob demonstrated how Cloudmark's award-winning enterprise product, Authority, lets carriers easily take advantage of spam protection that delivers the highest accuracy and lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in the industry. Authority collaborates with the recently unveiled Cloudmark™ Rating to drastically reduce the overhead that weighs on carriers as they process tedious customer complaints and endure litigation surrounding spam and false positives. Cloudmark Rating is the first and only technology that allows carriers to safely deliver companies' critical email newsletters and billing reminders, for example, to subscribers' inboxes, not their congested spam quarantines.

"Openwave is dedicated to providing a complete messaging solution to meet our customers' requirements, including immediate protection from spam," said Rich Wong, general manager of messaging products for Openwave Systems. "We are proud to have Cloudmark represented at our conference this week as its solutions set a high bar in performance and accuracy for antispam protection."

With Cloudmark solutions, carriers no longer take expensive hits associated with call center complaint management, customer churn, or potential litigation because Authority's spam protection and lowest false positive rate ensure customers always receive the email they want to receive. Cloudmark Authority installs into the existing network infrastructure with low impact on the MTA (Mail Transport Agent). Significantly reducing the load on carriers' messaging systems, Cloudmark Authority only requires updates every 30 to 60 days (not every few minutes like others), calls for minimal administrative intervention, and quickly pays for itself in customer satisfaction.

Cloudmark built its Authority product by recognizing that spammers mutate message structure in the same way that genes in DNA can be mutated. Just as scientists predict whether someone will have a particular disease by looking for specific gene mutations, Cloudmark Authority predicts whether a message is spam by looking for specific mutations in message structure called spamGenes. Authority uses spamDNA, a collection of spamGenes, to feed its proprietary genetic classifier which progressively learns how to stop spam more effectively. Finally, Cloudmark improves Authority's effectiveness by constantly evolving the spamDNA it gets from Cloudmark SpamNet, the first and largest SpamFighting community in the world with more than 600,000 users.

"Cloudmark and Openwave's goals are in line to offer customers easy deployment and immediate payback from their email and messaging investments," said Jacob. "Our latest technology advancement, Cloudmark Rating, enables carriers to shed the burden of customer complaints and litigation that stem from false positives by extending the 'choice' to the end user."

Ferris Research estimates that mistakenly blocked emails, called false positives, will cost businesses as much as $3.5 billion this year. Cloudmark launched its automatic email rating system last week to ensure that legitimate emails from trusted senders, like opt-in newsletters and other customer email correspondence, don't get erroneously filtered out by prolific gateway and client-based spam filters. On the opposite side, end users are for the first time given a safe, valid option to "Unsubscribe" from such emails. The Cloudmark Rating System is easy to implement and can reach just about everyone, regardless of the anti-spam product they are using. Just like reputation systems have helped distinguish good sellers from bad sellers on eBay or good products from bad products on Amazon, Cloudmark Rating does the same for email. Now a reputation system for "good" email exists just like Cloudmark™ SpamNet, the company's consumer and business anti-spam solution, created a reputation system for spam. Customers achieve a brand new level of confidence in their email and messaging deployments:

  • Carriers don't have to worry about how to enable their end users to get the email they want - they eliminate customer complaints and litigation brought on by spam and false positives by extending the "choice" to the end user.
  • End users cast off the frustrating and inherent fear of clicking a URL or sending an email to "Stop receiving this newsletter," for example, because Cloudmark Rating System has verified senders' Opt-out programs. Now, users don't suffer from the collateral implications of Unsubscribe actions: being unknowingly added to disquieting spammer target lists.
